After debuting at the production’s royal opening on October 30, 2010, the Alcons Audio installation has been retired following a sixteen‑year tenure in the custom‑built TheaterHangaar, situated within the repurposed Valkenburg naval airfield in the Netherlands.
The theatre accommodated roughly 1,100 audience members on a raked floor that formed a 30‑metre‑wide turntable, rotating patrons past the scenery while a half‑circle video wall projected images across a 180‑degree arc surrounding the hangar.
Because the set’s considerable mass kept the loudspeakers off the moving platform, the audio layout was engineered so that rotating viewers stayed within the speakers’ sweet spots, preserving tonal consistency, precise imaging and clear dialogue. Sound designer Jeroen ten Brinke specified close to one hundred Alcons LR14 cabinets, arranged in left‑center‑right clusters for each scene and paired with a dual 15‑inch subwoofer. Fourteen of these speaker arrays encircled the space and were driven by thirty Alcons ALC4 units, each delivering 2 × 2 kW of power.
